Makeover Simulation

I was responsible for completely overhauling the information architecture.

I designed a ‘browse by color and by brand’ system.  My knowledge of the proportions of the human face were leveraged to improved substantially improve the tracing of the user’s eyes, nose etc for more accurate makeup and hair fitting. I also worked with the director to develop the monetization concepts and integrated better ad placement.

User could first browse by brand and then narrow it down by product line

The old zoom went to the center of the photograph.  This new Smart Zoom automatically focused on what the user needed to see whether it was the eyes, the face or the lips.  Smart zoom enabled users to navigate the face.

The photo controls allowed the user to edit, rotate, flip undo, redo and more.  Previously these featured were buried in a menu impossible to find.

After doing competitive research, this new information architecture was proposed and implemented, improving the users ability to easily find products as well as stay immersed in their simulation.

We can't forget to leave room for paid ads.
 

Prior to this new design, flat color swatches were used.  Swatches were inneffective in communicating how makeup reflects in the light, its texture and its color.  

I spent one full week with a professional makeup artist and photographer learning the ins and outs of lip plumper, lip liners and more.  From there, I worked with engineering team to introduce the concept of showing 'texture' to more effectively communicate what the product was like.  

The engineering team which was all male, had no experience with makeup so this was extremely helpful for them to understand what to build.

Many users were not interested in browsing by brand and for them we created the new browse by color system.  This was a technical leap but in the end we monetized the feature by allowing specific companies to buy the right to be the 'default red' or other colors.
